E-Bikes: Do I Need Insurance For Them?

As new technologies continue to evolve the way we live and enjoy our spare time, “Do I need insurance for this?” is something we may not think of asking. Take e-bikes and similar types of motorized devices. They are fun, our parks, streets, and sidewalks are filled with them, and yet there are risks involved in their use.

What to think about

E-bikes can travel at 20-30 mph, which is faster than the speed a professional biker can reach on a traditional bike. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, e-bikes related ER visits more than doubled from 2017 to 2021. This shows that even though these devices don’t require a license for use, it’s important to protect you, your family, and your assets against accidents. This can include property coverage for the device and – much more important – liability coverage in the event you were to injure someone else while riding.

What to know

What most people don’t realize is that coverage for e-bikes and similar devices may not be included under their homeowners’ policy.

As they are still relatively new, each insurance company tends to handle them differently.

If you use one of these devices, give us a call and we will walk you through your options, so you can ride them with total peace of mind.
